There are some very strong computer programs you can buy for your PC, e.g. Rybka, Junior, Fritz, Rebel, Shredder. These programs will beat just about anyone, including top grandmasters.

If you want to play against computers on-line I suggest Free Internet Chess Server. It is a server that is dedicated to chess. It takes some special software (free). Once you learn the quirks, it is the best chess experience on the web!

try "yahoo chess" you'll play against a real person, and yahoo chess has different levels and you can play with different time controls...who knows?...maybe i can beat you?
the board at yahoo is MUCH nicer and more people play there
