Should i buy a chess set?

I was thinking about buying a wooden chess set for about 拢80 cos i like playing chess - but at the moment i only play alone against the computer. Is it worth me spending all this money when i only play against the computer and not against any people?

Also, i dont have much moneyShould i buy a chess set?
No.

Cheap plastic to play people out of the house and a nice set to show off at home.

This would be a show off set. Unless you have people come over to play, pass on it.
Nah don't bother... unless you'd be willing to actually call people over and socialise - and then buying it would make a huge change to your lifestyle for the better. Otherwise the money is just wasted.Should i buy a chess set?
you really dont need to spend that much on a chess set

buy a chep plastic one and keep the pecies in a nice box and the board in your back pack

though i love Chess and own many sets, some i have bought others were gifts

if this woooden one folds up and has a place to store the pecies then go for it

that has to be one of my favorite sets, when the board is folded it holds the pecies inside it like a briefcase
Do u really need to spend 80$ on a chess set. Don't bother. But if you are the type that plays chess like everyday than yes.Should i buy a chess set?
By all means buy a set, but not so expensive.

My favourite is about 12 inches square, and magnetic. There are drawers beneath, to keep the pieces in. It means I can take it anywhere, and incidentally it's a great conversation piece!

It cost me about 拢30 about ten years ago, and has lasted well.

I've played games on it in bars, on the train, on top of a mountain, and even once in a disco!

Chess is really a social game, imho.
Assuming you live in the UK because of the sterling symbol, suggest you look in charity shops or car boot sales. You should be able to pick up a reasonabe new set for 拢20 to 拢30 (with board).

Playing a real person as opposed to online is much more rewarding in my opinion
If you want to use it for decoration as well as for play, go for it. If you want a nice set just to play with, look at either wooden folding sets, or sets with large plastic pieces and a roll-up mat. if you are looking for people to play against, just take a set down to the local coffee shop, along with a book. set up the board on the table, and eventually someone will probably want to play. you can just read until you find an opponent. Playing on a nice set can instill a certain sense of pride of ownership, but it can't make you a better player. However, the happier you are with your set, the more you will want to use it. good luck!

try joining a chess club, or starting your own club?
If your just going to train with one you don't an expensive set they sell tube sets cheap $10-26 they take can take any abuse dropping the pieces or even some idiot spilling a cup of coffee on it (vinyl boards are washable)
Proper board-game chess is very good for building up strategy %26amp; logic, but 拢80 to me sounds a bit to high, particularly on a low budget. Buy a cheaper one.

Mind you, if NO-ONE would want to play with you in real life then don't bother. Playing chess with yourself is NOT fun (believe me!).
