any ideas for a good one under $65?I want to buy a good electronic chess set it does not have to be handheld, just let me play against computer.?
It really depends what you are looking for, but the cheapest play to buy an electronic chess set is Amazon.com. They sell all of the name brand ones, and they have the best prices, many times half the price of the game stores.
There are two basic types of electronic chess sets: one with actual chess pieces and one with a touch screen. The first thing you need to determine is which kind of electronic chess game you are wanting. If you want to be able to use the game to play regular chess, even when the computer elements are turned off, then I would suggest an electronic chess game with actual chess pieces. If you are looking for something that you can play anywhere, such as in a car, on a plane, etc, without losing the pieces, then I would suggest an electronic chess game with a touch screen.
The next thing to consider is size. Do you want a handheld game, or a full size game? With handheld electronic chess games, I would highly recommend the touch screen electronic chess games. The chess pieces for the handheld electronic games are so small, and the magnets are generally weak that the game can be difficult to play. Full size electronic chess games come in both touch screen and with playing pieces versions, and you will want to consider where you will be playing your chess game to decide which kind is best for you.
The next thing to consider is what kind of features you are looking for. Here are some important ones to consider:
Do you need a mute button or volume control? (In other words, do you need the ability to turn the sound off)
Do you need one that runs on batteries or would you prefer one with an AC adapter?
Do you need a carrying case?
Do you need a built in chess teacher/tutorial to train you how to play chess?
Do you need one that has multiple skill levels?
Once you have determined your needs, here are some recommendations of which electronic chess sets to buy:
My recommendation as the best of the best for a full size electronic chess game with playing pieces is the Excalibur Kingmaster lll Electronic Chess/Checkers. This model is under $40 on Amazon, is a playing pieces model, includes an LCD display, has 72 skill levels of chess, also allows you to play checkers at 16 different skill levels, built in teaching mode to teach new comers how to play, the pieces and board are magnetic, and it has a built in storage compartment for the playing pieces. It runs on 3 AA batteries.

My recommendation for a handheld electronic chess game with playing pieces (all though I am not big on the tiny playing pieces so the handheld version is not my favorite) is the Advanced Travel Chess Computer. At a price tag of just under $60, you can play at any of 64 different skill levels, have up to 30 moves of "undos" for when the computer is outsmarting you and you feel like an idiot, a cheat mode that let's you inside the mind of the computer, and the option to add a power adapter (not included of course). It runs off 3 AAA batteries. http://www.amazon.com/ChessCentral-Advan鈥?/a>
Electronic chess sets I would personally pass on:
Chess Explorer by Saitek
Pros: looks and feels like real chess; has a chess clock built it
Cons: not enough features for the pricetag; short warranty period
Saber IV Electronic Chess by Excalibur Electronics
Pros: lots of features; chess clock built in; affordable
Cons: durability is awful; if you plan to play a lot, skip this one.
Personally, I prefer the electronic chess sets with the playing pieces, it just feels more "real" to me, if you know what I mean. But, to each his own. Good luck with your search! I do not know the best electronic chess games as far as touch screen games are concerned, but maybe someone else here will.
If you choose to buy a full sized electronic chess set, and it does not come with a carrying case, purchase yourself a computer laptop carrying case when they are on sale. It will keep your game protected and help you protect your investment.
